About Scottish Cashmere

Cashmere from Scotland is renowned worldwide as the finest of fibres, prized for its softness, warmth, and luxurious feel. Please download our free About Scottish Cashmere factsheet (88kb PDF).

The wool itself is from a rare breed of goat, originally from Asia but now also reared in Scotland. Its fine downy undercoat grows during the cold winter months, deep beneath the animal's coarser outer guard hair. And indeed, some of our suppliers specify wool uniquely from the most tender parts of the animal, such as under its chin! In spring, as the weather warms, this down is shed and harvested by combing or shearing. The cashmere production process is therefore 100% natural and cruelty-free.

Scotland has long been famed for its skills in producing high quality knitwear, and is the world's largest processor of quality cashmere fibre. This should not be mistaken for the cheaper, short-stranded product from places like China, Mongolia, or Afghanistan. These lesser wools and more basic processing give vastly inferior warmth, strength, or softness to the genuine Scottish article, so these garments may quickly lose their shape.

Purely Cashmere supplies only the finest quality cashmere from leading British producers, dispatched from our premises in Scotland's capital city, Edinburgh.

How should I care for my cashmere?

Cashmere knitwear and homewares may be hand washed or dry cleaned. We recommend regular hand washing by immersing your garment in a solution of warm water and a gentle wool wash product. We supply a range of specialist cashmere care products, designed to help you maintain, store, and transport your garments in pristine condition.
